COIMBATORE: The State Highways Department hopes to complete the first phase of the Western Bypass project in Coimbatore by August next year.

The 32-km-long line will be completed in three phases, officials said. The first phase includes the development of 11.8 km of four lane road from Madukkarai to Madampatti. In the first phase, a road with footpath will be constructed at a cost of Rs 200 crore. The work has slowed down due to a problem with the availability of sand. It will be rectified and the work will be completed soon, officials said.
In the second phase, 70 per cent of the land acquisition process has been completed. It is almost 10 km from Madampatti to Kanuvai. The government must complete at least 90% of the funding allocation.
The process of acquiring land for the final phase has just started and after the completion of this project, the entire scope of the project changes and the public perception changes. The Western Bypass was created almost two decades ago. Now it’s about to end.
Another road; The National Highways wing of the State Highways Department has proposed to widen the L&T Bypass road from Nilambur to Madukkarai (27.2 km) to six lane. The Tamil Nadu government has sent the proposal to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in this regard. There are frequent accidents in this area.
Parallel to the Thoppur pass, accidents are frequent here. Following the death of 120 motorists here in road accidents last year, the project was prepared and dispatched last month. The approval is yet to be granted.
Though it is a 2 lane road, it is very narrow due to traffic congestion in some places. The L&T bypass road will be widened to six lane from Nilambur to Madukkarai (27.2 km). This will reduce traffic congestion here.
Similarly, accidents are expected to decrease here. As many as 55 motorists lost their lives in this stretch in 2022. According to data from the Coimbatore police, 711 motorists lost their lives in 680 road accidents last year. As many as 120 motorists were killed on the Madukkarai-Nilambur road.
To that extent, the road is narrow and fraught with danger. In this situation, this important L&T road in Coimbatore is going to be widened. , 28 km long Coimbatore bypass is being constructed and operated by L&T Transportation Infrastructure Limited (L&T TIL). This is the first road implemented under a BOT-based privatisation scheme in South India.
The bypass road starts on the Salem side of NH47 in Nilambur and joins the road on the Palghat side near Madukkarai. Rs. 100 The road was constructed at a cost of RS 1.04 billion. The road has been laid along the old bridge on NH-47 in Coimbatore through the Athupalam bridge that runs across the Noel river.
It will take 32 years for this bypass and 21 years for the Athupalam bridge. At the same time, there is a severe traffic jam here. In this situation, the National Highways Division of the State Highways Department is going to widen the important L&T road in Coimbatore.
